Research & Mission

My journey began with a Bachelor's degree in Medical Physics and Biophysics at the University of Bucharest, followed by specialized Master's research in proton therapy. My international PhD through the prestigious 3+3 program spanning Romania, Russia (JINR), and Czech Republic focused on optimizing proton and carbon ion therapy in the presence of metallic implants.

Today, as a Senior Scientific Researcher at ADVACAM, I lead groundbreaking research in Timepix3 detector technology, FLASH radiotherapy characterization, and space radiation monitoring. My work transforms fundamental physics discoveries into practical tools that advance precision cancer treatment worldwide, bridging the gap between cutting-edge research and real-world clinical applications.

Current Role

As a Senior Scientific Researcher at ADVACAM I lead multiple groundbreaking projects developing detectors for ultra-high pulse dose rate radiotherapy, methods for quality assurance and beam characterization and dosimetry. I supervise PhD students and serve as project leader for Timepix3-based beam characterization systems that are revolutionizing particle therapy dosimetry.

PTD Workshop

Cristina is the Chair and Organizer of the PTD Workshop, an annual event dedicated to particle tracking and detectors, created as a follow-up to PTCOG for the detector community.

The first edition took place on 15 June 2026 in Prague, welcoming 70 international participants.

Key Achievements

Principal Investigator of the European EMPIR UHDpulse project developing metrology for ultra-high pulse dose rate radiotherapy

Particle therapy beam characterization and quality assurance

LET Measurements with Timepix detectors

FLASH RT, beam and treatment monitoring

Pioneered thermal neutron detection methods in FLASH radiotherapy fields using novel track recognition algorithms

Delivered 60+ international presentations

Publishing 50+ articles out of which 15+ are as First author/Corresponding author or Senior/Last author

International Collaborations

My experimental work includes beam studies with proton beams at the Proton Therapy Center Czech, CCB Proton Therapy Center Kraków, MedAustron (Austria), OncoRay Dresden, Nuclear Physics Institute CAS Prague, Emory University (USA), Mayo Clinic (USA), and Northwestern Proton Therapy Center (Chicago, USA); with heavy ions at Heidelberg Ion Beam Therapy Center, MedAustron, GSI (Germany), and HIMAC Chiba (Japan); as well as with electron beams at PTB Germany, UZ Brussels and the Microtron facility at CAS Prague.

As a member of the PTCOG (attending since 2014), presenter and session chair at PTCOG61, I actively contribute to the global particle therapy community. These international partnerships have enabled breakthrough projects in LET studies, particle tracking, dosimetry, FLASH radiotherapy metrology, and advanced detector development, combining diverse expertise to accelerate innovation in medical physics and space radiation monitoring.

Public Speaking & Teaching

I enjoy speaking at conferences, sharing ideas, and mentoring junior researchers. Whether it's at PTCOG, FRPT, IWORID, ANIMMA, IEEE conferences, or specialized medical physics symposiums, I believe in the power of knowledge sharing to drive our field forward.

Let's Connect

I am always open to collaborative conversations—whether on new detection methods, interdisciplinary experiments, or sharing knowledge at conferences and events. The best discoveries often happen when curious minds come together.
